21 March Main Talk Grand Revival – Royal Canal Restored
By John McKeon
Grand Revival – Royal Restored
John Mc Keown, Regional Manager, Waterways Ireland
The talk will trace the history of the Grand and Royal Canals from 1756 to present day, the construction issues encountered, the decline, the revival, the restoration and regeneration of these ‘channels for prosperity’ for the benefit of existing and future generations. These navigations form part of our national heritage both historical (as engineering and architectural remains of an early industrial age) and natural because of the wide range of semi – natural habitats to be found along them. The challenge for the future is to develop the leisure and recreational function of the waterways while still maintaining their heritage value as this forms a large part of what appeals to the users.
