A very successful days outing was conducted to the Portumna Workhouse and Portuma Castle and Gardens on Thursday 13th June

The history club were given wonderful guides to tell us of the history and stories of these places in Portumna.

Great work is being carried out on the Portumna workhouse for it to be a museum of this type of institution for which there were over 130 in the country in the 19th century. Most of the buildings are still intact and convey the atmosphere of this institution. A wonderful guide gave great descriptions of the layout and work practices carried out in the workhouse.

The castle gardens at Portumna are being wonderfully restored by the OPW and are a nice place to relax if your in this area. Our guide showed the various features of the gardens and the wonderful plants were in great flower for our visit.

The Castle offered us an insight into the families and history of this area and how this building was saved and restored as it is an unique castle of its type in the country. Some great displays and audio visuals helped to give us the full history of families, castles and restoration work in progress.

Portumna is a wonderful place to spend time in.
